CGRC - Sternwheeler Days 5K / 10K

It was time once again for the Sternwheeler Days 5K and 10K .   Our wish came true as we had hoped for a nice dry sunny day for the event.  Considering all the rain we have had it was a blessing.  As we drove across the Bridge of the Gods the scenic quaint town of Cascade Locks had come to life and people were hustling and bustling around.  It was the Annual Sternwheeler Days Festival.!!

As we came down on the race start where we were setting up for the race the runners began to trickle in. Randomly people from the frontier camp would walk by giving a feel we had turned back the clock to the days of Lewis and Clark.  As you looked across to the River it was a flock of fishing poles and lines catching fish.

We quickly set everything up with the appreciated help of Esther and Stan.  Doing all the final markings on the course.  The runners continued to arrive & after everyone was all signed in all the runners lined up at the starting line to take off on the race.

Famous words:  "On your mark, get set, go" and we were off with a good head wind and a gradual hill & was a tough first mile. As the runners got on the trail out towards the Hatchery the shaded tall timber and moss covered trail made you realize this is truly god country.

Off they all flew down the trail . All with great effort and love for running and walking.

End the end, there are now 6 new course records.  Congratuations to all and now the bar has been set higher for next year.

The one thing that we always see at the races are happy runners with big smiles. What a great way to start a day!

It was a great day for a race!

Thanks to all that helped and participated!

CGRC - Carson to Stevenson Ridge Trail Run - 15K

The 2011 CRGC Carson to Stevenson Ridge Trail Run finished in a blaze with new course records for 18 & under Men's and Women's, as well as Women's Open.

This race could not have been successful without Ben Shumaker's direction.  Roger ensured the course was well marked and we had lots of bottled water along the way.  A big thanks to Skamania County Parks and Recreation for sponsoring the event.  It seemed like our local Ambulance Service was around every corner.

Anna Bates, Sophie Miller, Chad Miller, Lori Latendress, and Andy Grossman picked up 600 lbs of trash along the route to make it "shine".

The Dalles - St Patty's Day River Run/Walk

The St. Patty's Day River Run/Walk is one of several runs scheduled this year to support the Jump Start Summer Basketball Camp and Colonel Wright Elementary physical education.

Race Report by Tom Conklin:

The final event of the three Jumpstart Winter race series began at the marina in The Dalles on March 12th. March typically brings March type weather, however the weather this time around was nearly perfect for a Spring race. The temps., settled around a crisp 49 degrees, overcast, with no wind. Two course records were broken and many top performances were turned in by walkers and runners alike as they returned for a second or third shot at breaking their previous individual course records on the Columbia River Trail course.

Dalles - The Heart Truth 3K/5K

Several members of the Columbia Gorge Running Club participated in the Heart Truth 3K/5K in The Dalles, Oregon.

Bryan Mears

“The Heart Truth” 3K and 5K were part of three days of heart healthy fun and activities in The Dalles, Oregon. Part of the “Go Red” for Women’s Heart Health and the National Wear Red Day (February 4th) to raise awareness and to be a wake up call to American women.

The race started at The Dalles Marine Park with overcast skies and blustery conditions but temperatures in the 50’s. After the cold days of last week it seemed mild and warm in comparison, Alisha and I donned our sweatshirts and registered for the race. We wanted to do a warm up so started briskly walking the route, turning around and heading back after making it to the underpass slightly before the 3K turnaround. We ran most of the way back, warming up and shedding our sweatshirts which Alisha took back to the car for us.

By then it was time to start the race, I noticed Bryan Mears standing there ready to go and asked him about the course since I’d never done this one before. The some instructions I couldn’t hear because of the wind, and we’re off! Just leaving the path for the sidewalks I see the familiar face of Scott McMullen taking photos of the racers, I had to show off my Columbia Gorge Running Club official shirt under my bright orange fleece vest for my photo.

There was a nice gentleman serving up water at the 5k turnaround point and a great group cheering us on at the finish line, including Scott with his cheery thumbs up. It was a fun race with great people, some runners and a lot of walkers of all age groups, so something for everyone. I look forward to doing this one again.
